“When I was about eight, I decided that the most wonderful thing, next to a human being, was a book.” ~Margaret Walker
The Barefoot CEO Lisa Hammond shares the books that made a difference in her life:
Revolution from Within, Gloria Steinem
To say this book was life changing would not be an understatement. Meeting Gloria Steinem had been on my Life List for many, many years. That dream came true when we both were giving speeches at the same women’s conference.
Erma Bombeck Bestsellers Boxed Set
I first read Erma Bombeck’s books when I came across this boxed set while house sitting for a neighbor when I was just a kid. I read the entire set that week. Erma’s way with words and wit may well have been what made me want to be a writer.
The Temple of My Familiar, Alice Walker
Alice Walker is one of my favorite writers. There is a long passage in this book that I found so powerful and profound I actually had an artist paint it on a huge wall in a home I built. Everyone would come in and read the inspiring wall and be Helped by it.
Take Time for Your Life, Cheryl Richardson
At the time this book came into my life I am ashamed to admit my life was so out of balance I didn’t even have time to read it. I had to listen to the audio version. It took me weeks driving back and forth to my office to hear the entire book, and even longer to finally apply what the Cheryl was saying to my life. However, I credit this book for planting the seeds that ultimately led me to make the adjustments I needed to get sleep, sanity and some fun back into my life!
Losing My Virginity, Richard Branson
As sexy as this title is, this book is really all about the thrill of business. Branson’s passion and willingness to take risks is a lesson for every entrepreneur. Business should be fun, and nobody looks like they are having more fun than the guy running his company from Necker Island.
