Here are my favorite top 5 tips from my recent book for staying ahead of the sanity curve and staying (for the most part) in the land of the focused.
1) Write It down
Whether it is on an app, an ipad, a fancy planner pad or a plain notebook get in the habit of writing things down. Our brains are like faulty alarm clocks, they will remind you to buy the lasagna noodles at 3am, trust me.
2) Identify The Tasks for the Next Day
Anyone who knows me, knows that one day this will be engraved on my tombstone. Take the time on a daily basis to identify the key 5-8 tasks that must get done the next day. Here’s the trick : it’s alot easier to write down the crucial items when they get to be completed tomorrow and not today. Here’s another bonus – when you have those quiet 12 minutes you wont be overwhelmed with choosing what to do – your list will tell you and your productivity will thank you.
3) Make fake mini deadlines
Remember last time you travelled /filed taxes / moved home ? How was the stress level ? If you are like the majority of people the last minute stress level was pretty rough. Here’s the good news going forward – how about making your own fake deadlines ? Then there is no last minute panic. Next time you travel / have a work assignment / move across country go ahead and head fake yourself by moving the deadline up a day or two. Then with the bulk of work done you will have the sanity to remember that tuna fish sandwich you left on the couch / fridge / garbage. You get the gist.
4) Find time for what you love
You are not a machine. You can’t live a happy life if you don’t make time for fun. You will become resentful of those around you that do. Want to run a marathon ? Do it. Want to have a spa day ? Work out the details and escape. Same for learning to play piano, knit or scuba dive.
5) Stop trying to do it all
There just isn’t the time to do all the things we want to. Learn how to say yes to the important people and tasks in your life by saying no to the items you can’t afford to take on right now. It’s a classic case of ‘ my heart says yes but my calendar says no’.
Taking on any of these 5 tips will most certainly reduce your daily intake of ‘frazzle’ and up your absorption of ‘focus’. Good luck!
