Mello Mallo makes marshmallows BUT not just ANY marshmallows. Their marshmallows are soft, squidgy, light, melty and full of flavor. PLUS… they don’t just come in ‘pink and white’ flavours.
Oh yeah, did we mention they’re part of our Holiday Marketplace?
Read on to find out more about this tasty #handmade business.

Describe your business in 3 sentences.
Mello Mallo makes handcrafted marshmallows, quite unlike the pink and white varieties found on supermarket shelves. Each mallo is made to order in my little kitchen in Bedfordshire, UK, in small batches and using natural and good ingredients with nothing artificial. I like to throw a healthy dose of creativity into the (sticky) mix, so the treats not only taste fantastic but look great too.
What inspired you to start your business?
I’ve always loved to make things, and people have often called me creative but I just couldn’t make the connection – as far as I could see, I wasn’t good at art! It took a long time for me to realise that my love for food and cooking meant that I was just as creative as an illustrator or jewellery designer. Starting my own business was something I’d often dreamed about, and now I’ve made that a reality. Being able to work in the way that is best for me is great, and I love the fact that there are no limits to what I can do.
How many hours a week do you spend working your business? How much sleep do you get a night?
If I were asked how many hours I work a week, I’d have to say there is no fixed answer! I think it’s like this for many people working for themselves. Some weeks I can be so busy there is no time for anything else. It’s usually like this before a big show or event, when I’ll spend a lot of time in the kitchen. Other times, the flow is steadier – I get a chance to catch up with blogging and social media, and of course spend an evening or two in front of the TV!
How do you develop product ideas?
One of the best things about running a marshmallow business is that I get to try out so many ideas for new products, and of course, test them! Inspiration comes from so many places, such as the seasons, colour and shape, and nostalgia! I find instagram an inspiring place to while away some spare time – as is Pinterest – the wealth of images is fascinating and very addictive. I get ideas of food trends by reading blogs and magazines and wondering how I can apply that to my marshmallows. There is a real ‘kid in a sweetshop’ excitement when I think up new ideas!
How do you maintain a work/life balance?
When your business is your passion, it can be hard to maintain a work-life balance. Working from home means that there are often no set work hours, uniform or rules. One of the benefits of this though, is that I can nip out for lunch or a coffee in the middle of the day, because I can catch up later with work. On the flip side, I only ever stop thinking about all things business when I’m asleep (and sometimes not even then!) If I’ve had a particularly testing day, I make an effort to shut down the laptop or put down the mallo cutting wheel at a reasonable hour so I can try and unwind.
