Bright and Shiney New Keywords- How Do You Find Them? by @patchworkposse

Finding New Keywords

Now that we have focused on how to find what we are already authority on, using them in our content, building backlinks, you can now move onto finding new ones.

These are the words or phrases that you would like to be found in the search engines for.  You still want to build on the ones you are authority on, but you also need to build your authority on new topics which are relative to your site and get great searches.

Using the same settings as step #2 we will be using the keyword research tool.

What topic would you like to write about? What topic can you write more than one article on? {remember, that once you get searches for this keyword, you will need to repeat that keyword for more articles in the future} This is the topic, phrase that you will be researching.

Type this word and start taking a look at your results.  Some questions to ask- are the searches above 800 per month?   What is the trend for this topic—are you posting it a totally wrong time or great time? What are the other keywords that come up with it? Can you use these in addition to your main one in the article?

All of this info will help you decide if this topic will be a good one to work on.  Sometimes you will find that one you had in mind isn’t a great one, but one that is suggested in addition to it is.  Switch gears if you can and use that more searched keyword instead with the other lower searched phrases as your backup or helpers to the main one.

A lot of times those additional keywords suggested will springboard new topics for me to write on.

If you are in the writing groove, find a few and write those posts up.  Get them scheduled for a future date.  This will help you keep on track and get you ahead of the posting schedule too.

If the timing is bad {you looked at the trends and found that it isn’t the right time to post it} you can still write it up and schedule it for when the trending is going to start. That way you are ahead of the trend, and can be found in the searches before others notice that there is a trend.

Ask questions.  This is a great way to find new topics.  Start your keyword with a question.  The basic how, when, where, what and why will work just fine.  This will allow you to break down your topic even further and make them useful to even beginners.  Go basic with your posts- your readers will thank you.

Can the topic you have be broken down into a series?  Don’t try to jam all that you have found into one post.  Find points that you can write an individual post on and write a whole series.  Make sure you use the same keywords for each post, and link back and forward to each other.  This will help you become an authority of the subject and raise your ranking.

Finding new keywords is a great way to expand the ones that you already rank for,  and build your authority.

4 Basic Link Back Building Ideas by @patchworkposse

Keywords are a great way to build back links with other bloggers.  Not only do they help us when we use them in our content, images and tagging propely, but when we grow backlinks from other blogs it can help us even more.

There are a few ways you can build backlinks with other bloggers.

Guest Post– writing an article for someone else is a great way to control the content you are sharing, use keywords that you want to build authority on, and reach out to others who discovered you yet.  When writing an article, pick a topic that you would like to build your authority on.  If you have found those keywords that you are already authority on, use those as a springboard for articles.  Follow the outline to using keywords in your post, and make sure that one of the keywords has a link back to your site- to a specific post that is also talking about the keyword linked.  This link will do full circle for the search engines and share that not only do you write about it on your blog, but you also write about it on others, thus giving your more authority.

Link Lists– this might be a list of resources….example- my favorite how to’s for blogging. The list will have the keyword, then the blog name.  The keyword would be linked to the specific post about that phrase or keyword on your blog.  You can include links to other sites, using their keywords {if you tag team with a few other blog partners}  They can post the list on their sites also- with your keyword linked and name, along with a few of their own links.

Newsletters–  While these don’t get indexed by the search engines, they do help you grow your reach.  Whether this is your own newsletter that you send to your readers, or someone else’s list, this is a great way to tell your readers what you are an expert on and using those keywords again will build your credibility with them.  When advertising or writing an article for someone’s newsletter, keep in mind the keyword and link it to a specific article on your site which is all about that keyword.

Social Media– placing your keywords in your shout outs is becoming more important.  You use the hash tag # before your keyword in twitter, pinterest, and google plus because they use these for searches.  This will help followers or new users to find you easier when they are searching for a new topic.  You can see what’s trending and use those #tags if they are relevant to your topic.  Just as in the newsletters, you can use this for your own social media or have your blogging partners share on their platforms for you.

Having your links on other sites is important.  You will want to be seen everywhere, by everyone.  The only way to do this is to build your exposure.  While doing this, pay attention to the words you use and the links you use with those keywords.  Take advantage of being featured on someone’s blog, list, social media and newsletters.  Paying attention to this can give you more authority in the search engines eyes-  they notice you everywhere too.

Where Do My Keywords Go? How Do I Use Them In My Post? via @PatchworkPosse

October 3, 2013 by Becky Jorgensen Leave a Comment

by Becky Jorgenson | Featured Contributor

How to use your keywords in your blog post

Now that your keywords are all figured out- it’s time to get them to work for building traffic.  The easiest way to do this is to use it in your blog post.  Your blog post content is where google and other search engines know for sure what you are talking about and helps viewers find you when they are searching for the topic you are writing about.

The flow of the content should be natural.  You shouldn’t stuff the content with a bunch of keywords thinking that it will be picked up and give you more authority.  We are not robots, we are people who write with a certain style and the search engines can tell when we are just adding keywords in an un-natural way to get ahead.  Keywords should be used naturally.

The blog post should move smoothly and should make sense.  Your readers will enjoy following you too if you aren’t too over the top with keywords and they can read your post without being thrown off by weird combinations of words.

There are a few spots which your keywords should show up.

Title— your keyword should be used in your title of the post.  Right off the bat, you should have it in the first sentence that the search engines look at and also your viewers.  It lets both know what the whole article is about.  If you can- make this eye catching or intriguing to the reader.  This will entice them to click on the post and read more.

Content– this is where you can naturally input the keyword.  You will want to use it again in the first paragraph of the article.  Since you had done a little research on keywords already, you will have 2-3 additional phrases or keywords to use in addition to the main keyword.  If you can separate topics by the keywords and use them as a Headline style of font, that will help even more.  Don’t go too overboard with these, as you want to keep things natural, but if it can be done smoothly, do it.  Use descriptive words with your keyword.  This helps narrow down what you are talking about and helps search engines share your link with others who are looking for that specific topic and niche also.  You will want to use the keyword and additional words at least once each, up to 3-4 times.  More than that and your readers will notice.

Photo—alt tags.  This is where you will want to put the keyword for the article.  When using your own photo, change the file name to the keyword and the alt tag also.  Don’t repeat the same keyword with each photo.  This is again where you can use your additional phrases that you had found and used in the content of the article.  The search engines have no idea what the image is about.  Your file name and alt tags is the only thing it has to give it a clue.  Make sure you use this spot to better your authority with the subject.  Viewers are now searching by image, and if you don’t have it properly tagged, you will miss out on searches, clicks and views.

Tags and Categories—After writing your article the tags and categories of the article can help it also.  Make sure you place the article in a proper category, relative to the topic.  Tags can be used to narrow down your topic.  Use descriptive words here to tag the article.  Use words that a viewer might be searching and help find your article.

Keywords can be a little tricky to use naturally in your article, but with some great writing skills and using them correctly, you can grow your audience by helping them find what your article is all about.

Do you have any other suggestions for using keywords in your post? Share them.

Finding Keyword Friends- They Don’t Like To Hang Out Alone by @PatchworkPosse

September 17, 2013 by Becky Jorgensen Leave a Comment

by Becky Jorgenson | Feature Contributor
Learn to use those keywords + additional keywords in that same area to build your authority

The keyword that you have chosen doesn’t like to be alone.  Finding the one keyword is a great start, but this is just the beginning.  You don’t want to over stuff your article with one single word or phrase.  This will become boring and a little obvious to your readers.  You will want to build on it.  The way you do that is to find others who will get along with it.  The additional phrases will narrow your topic.  They will be more descriptive type words.  Say for example if your keyword was patchwork quilt, then the additional keywords could be- easy patchwork quilt, patchwork quilt for beginners, sewing a patchwork quilt, patchwork quilt for babies.  See how this works?  These are the words that you want to use in addition to the main keyword in your article.  They will still need to be relevant to the topic and not too far reaching.

This can be found using the settings in keyword research in step #2.  When you are researching your main keyword, the keyword tool will have a long list of other keywords that are similar to the one you are looking for, but that might be searched by others.

Take note of a few words or phrases that you can work into your article to help the search engines narrow you down as a great content provider.  You don’t necessarily need to use them in the exact way or order that you see them listed, but can use the words in your article by themselves.  The search engines can put two and two together for you.

I have no idea what my keywords are, and how to find them. by @PatchworkPosse

July 24, 2013 by Becky Jorgensen 2 Comments

Keywords are a must have for your blog content. Finding them, using them and building on them is what I will be focusing on over the next few weeks.

A few things we will be going over

  • using analytics to find your keyword
  • building backlinks
  • finding new keywords
  • using them in your content and more!

keywords

I have been a blogger since 2008 and I have found that when I pay attention to my keywords and use them properly, there is a growth in views, followers and more. This is one area of your content that needs your full attention — and when you give it, it will reward you back.

Today we will be hitting the I have no idea what my keywords are– and how to find them.

We are going to assume that you have google analytics already set up on your blog so you can measure everything. {if you don’t have that, please stop what you are doing and get it set up and running- it’s a must have for bloggers} We will be using some of the info that google analytics gives you to find your special keywords. If you have been blogging for at least a few months, google will already know what you are all about and what it thinks your hot topics/keywords are. The longer you have been around, the more info that it has to determine your topics and words.

This is a great way to start off when you are really at a loss as to what you should focus on. Using these words is an easy start. Why work hard on another topic, when you can quickly grow by building on one you already are an authority on. Let’s get started.

Open up your analytics page for your blog.

Click:

  1. Content
  2. Site content
  3. Landing pages
  4. Adjust the time {found at the top right- calender} put this info 1 year long -whether you have been blogging this long or not, keep the time frame to one year. Apply the change.
  5. Make the display show rows 50 posts at one time {found in the bottom right corner}

Let’s quickly go over where we are and why we are looking here. First, we are looking at the landing pages. These are the pages that most of our traffic is coming to.

We changed the time frame showing a full year because that will give you more of a true overview of what people are landing on. What are they hitting your site first when they find you? What does google see viewers like when they find your links? We are displaying at least 50 posts so we can use this to find our most popular posts, which will lead us to our keywords.

Take a few notes on what is popular on your site– what topics do you see repeatedly? What is hitting the sweet spot with your readers and followers? These are the topics you need to write more on. Finding topics will help you narrow down your keywords. We can cross reference these topics with the info collected in the next step.

Let’s look at another spot to find more info-

Click:

  1. Traffic sources
  2. Sources
  3. Search
  4. Organic
  5. Adjust the time to show 1 year {top right corner}
  6. Display at least 50 rows {bottom right corner}

Why are we here and what are we looking at? We are looking at searches– these are our magical keywords that viewers have used to find us. Again, we are looking at a one year time frame to help us even more with what google thinks we are all about. By displaying more rows, we can quickly find the repeating keywords or topics. This will of course back up the info that we found earlier with the landing pages. This gives us a more narrowed idea of exactly the topics and keywords that we are found for.

Take a few notes on what the popular or repeating themes that are listed there.

When I look at mine I find a variety of keywords that reference one area– example: patchwork patterns, patchwork patterns for beginners, patchwork quilt patterns, free patchwork patterns, ect. The resounding theme– patchwork patterns. I am pretty confident that if I use some kind of combination of that keyword, that google will send traffic my way because I have a good base to build on already.

What are you going to do with this info now that you know what it is? Use it!

That’s right. Your notes that you have take will give you everything you need. These are the topics {what are the most popular posts written about} and these are the magical search words {what are your repeating keywords}.

Start posting at least once per month on these topics and keywords on your blog. By doing this you will be building on the base that has already been set up for you {you did this without really even knowing it!} and quickly make you look better in Google’s eyes and draw more traffic and views your way.
