Cindy left her corporate job where she worked in the HR department.
Tired and frustrated she was going to start her own lifestyle coaching business.
When we talked about her blueprint for success she simply said she was going to use her Facebook fan page.
That may have worked in the past but because of the Facebook algorithms you might be reaching 3% of those who have “liked” your page.
Of course there’s Facebook ads but she didn’t want to spend the money to do that.
I tell my clients all the time that you can’t use Facebook only. You need to have your own website.
That brought up another interesting topic, blogging.
How would people know about her knowledge and expertise if she didn’t have her own website and she didn’t blog.
Her response? She was going to do strategy sessions. But how was she going to get strategy sessions?
Magically they were going to contact her via Facebook. People were going to start lining up to work with her even though they didn’t know what the benefit of doing so would be. To top it off she had not social proof about any aspect of her business.
What does this have to do with your business?
Have you ever shopped on Amazon? I have. You know what I do when I look at a product I’m considering buying?
I look at the testimonials. That’s the social proof. That being said there’s always several people who “bash” the product but as you look at the long list and see the majority say positive things, the more comfortable you feel about the purchase.
Recently I was looking at purchasing some training. There was a long list of people, many prominent in the industry that shared their experience with this person. These people weren’t getting an affiliate commission. They truly loved what this person was teaching.
This savvy business owner made sure he got written and video testimonials from these people as well as people just like you and me that took the course.
Companies like Amazon, QVC, HSN, Best Buy, (the list could go on) make sure they have testimonials.
True, it’s not always easy to get testimonials. I have one client in the Photo Hub Club who absolutely loves the photos she’s receiving but because she’s working on her own product she said she doesn’t have time to write a testimonial. Maybe you have people like that as well.
Then there are others who love being part of the Entrepreneur Hub Club. Again, sharing a testimonial is not on the top of their list of things to do.
It’s your job (and mine) to keep trying, keep asking.
Whenever I speak to a group of business owners the last thing I say is, “See my husband in the back with the video camera? I’d love for you to take a moment and get in front of the camera and say what value you received from today’s presentation. Be sure to tell us your name and website.” There’s always a line.
Having people give testimonials when you are at a live event is easier in many ways.
I’m fortunate enough to have a husband who, like myself is also an award winning videographer and photographer. Every time I speak at an event, he films it.
The question for you is….
Do you ask?
Whether you sell physical or digital products let people know the benefit others receive.
Use testimonials on your sales page when you have them. Use testimonials through out your website.
For example take a look at the testimonials on the Photo Hub Club. I asked people to send me a testimonial and they did! It’s not always easy but you have to keep trying.
If you have a product with no testimonials all is not lost because you now have some steps to take in order to have others share their experience with you.
Keep moving forward getting the social proof you need for your products and services.
