Can You Improve Your Business On Your Own?

If you got a business up and running and off the ground entirely off of your own back, you’ve done one of the most difficult things in the modern working world. Really, you deserve some congratulations for that! You should be proud of how far you’ve come and what you’ve needed to sacrifice to get it done.

But now that you’re a few months or a year or two in, it can feel like you’re running out of ideas (and motivation), and it can feel like you need to start looking to other people to build on your success. And when you feel like you’re running out of steam, your productivity and success can start to slip.

However, there’s still a well of good ideas inside of you – you’ve just got to bring them out. If you’re a sole business owner and you want to improve in the near future, here’s how to inspire and encourage yourself.

Take Marketing Seriously

Marketing isn’t something you do as and when, whenever you need a little pick me up in the profits area. It’s something you plan out long term and carry out all year round, especially when it’s the slow season and you need ten times the amount of leads to capture. If you want to improve the way your business operates when you’re the sole proprietor, make sure you’re taking your marketing seriously.

Start with social media, as this is the most accessible place to market your business. What kind of content has performed well in the past? What hashtags could you target? Could you even cross post between your website (and your blog, if you’ve got one) and the feed you’re pushing towards your customers? Lock down your marketing activity on these platforms and then start thinking about creative, multimedia marketing campaigns.

Leverage Actually Useful Software

It’s easy to download a hundred different applications in an attempt to become more productive, but in the end all you do is waste valuable hours having to track your data across each interface.

To leverage software that is actually useful to you, make sure you understand why you need the software in the first place as well as what it’s going to be able to do for you. You’re looking to avoid duplicates and bloatware here – the more function you can get out of one program, the better!

For example, subscribing to and downloading an app that’ll track your data products will help you keep on top of what your customers are saying, feeling, and doing in response to your marketing output. But that’s not all; you’ll also be able to use an app like this to build a plan for the future, up your own productivity, and guesstimate when and if you’ll actually need to start hiring employees.

Turn Up as Much as Possible

How often do you attend networking events? Trade shows? Business conferences that are hosted by your local chamber of commerce? If you never head to those shows because you think they’ll be a waste of time – or you’re a little too nervous too – we highly recommend booking a slot in the future.

Take Your Time

A business doesn’t improve overnight. It’s not something you’re going to be able to do all at once! If you’re pressuring yourself to manage this, we urge you to stop right now. You need to take your time, think about what it is you want to change, and then make steps to go in that direction.

Very, very few people have been able to do this in the space of a week or a month, and fewer still in 24 hours or under. Take your time, set yourself some new goals, and then work towards them slowly and steadily. When we go too fast we’re more likely to make mistakes and trip up along the way, which can send us back to square one in an instant. Don’t be that person. Put some effort in and only go as fast as you need to.

Improving a business doesn’t feel like a sole undertaking, but it is something you can find success with when working with only your own brain. Find some faith in yourself again through the ideas above, and never beat yourself up over missing an objective or having to take a goal down a notch. Business is a process, and the more work you put in, the more you’re going to see progress come out of it.
