Chelsea Ross has always believed that every woman deserves a space to reconnect with her own power. Over two decades ago, Chelsea realised that while the joy of shared adventure was transformative, the travel industry at the time offered very few supportive spaces designed specifically for women to thrive. Determined to bridge the gap between rugged adventure and soulful wellness, she took a leap of faith to create something entirely new.
Goddess Retreats, founded by Chelsea in 2003, stands as one of the world’s original women-only wellness sanctuaries. What began as a pioneer vision – combining her background as a corporate coach with her own spiritual exploration – has evolved into a twenty-year legacy that has empowered thousands of women globally. Today, Chelsea continues to lead the way in female-focused travel through her curated collection of retreats. Whether through the signature “Bali Goddess” program or specialized Wellness, Healing, Longevity, and Active styles like Surf and Padel, her personalized packages ensure every woman can choose the journey that best meets her needs.

Can you start by introducing yourself and telling us in your words, about your inspiring story?
My journey as an entrepreneur began with a deep, personal calling that started in my early twenties. I felt an intense need to understand myself and the world around me, which led me on a path of exploring a vast array of spiritual practices and therapies. In the late nineties, I was several years into studying Gestalt therapy when a new field called life coaching began to emerge. I immediately recognized the power of this proactive way of helping people, and in 1999, I became one of the first to embrace this new discipline. That same year, I also began my path as a Kriyaban yogi, immersing myself in the specific hatha yoga and meditation techniques that would become a cornerstone of my life.
By 2001, I was working as a corporate coach, helping professionals navigate the complexities of their careers and the ever-present challenge of work-life balance. While I valued that work, I felt a pull toward creating something more immersive. I wanted to take the profound questions I had been exploring through therapy, coaching, and yoga and bring them into a space where women could step away from the noise of their regular lives.
By 2003, all these seemingly diverse worlds collided. As a world traveler and a professional corporate coach, I recognized a significant gap in the world of wellness and sport. At that time, surfing was a pursuit that was largely inaccessible to women, with very few schools or supportive environments available. Yet, I knew from my own experience that surfing was a profoundly spiritual practice and one of the greatest tools for building self-confidence. I wanted to share the beauty of Bali and the life-changing lessons I had learned through my own personal growth and spiritual journeys.
This led me to create Surf Goddess Retreats, the first luxury, women-only surf and yoga experience. Over the years, our mission has evolved along with the needs of our guests. Today, we are Goddess Retreats, a service that has expanded to offer a diverse variety of wellness options, including fitness, Pilates, and deep healing retreats. We have moved from specifically sharing the joy of surfing to offering exploring wellness in many different ways. I have always believed each woman is unique, and so we offer a retreat experience that honours this. Our curated experiences have welcomed over eighteen thousand women across Bali, Japan, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives. For me, this business remains about providing the space where a woman’s internal and external journeys can finally meet in a way that a woman can transform.
Can you share more about your journey and how you got to where you are today?
My journey is rooted in a life spent in motion, as I was quite simply born to explore. Growing up, the world was my classroom because my family moved to a new country every two years. We lived in and explored places as diverse as Japan, Indonesia, Greece, and the Philippines, while crossing the globe through Australia, Canada, and the United States. This constant exposure to different cultures and environments fostered an endless curiosity that extended far beyond the maps we followed. I became deeply fascinated by the people I met and the underlying psychology of how we live, grow, and find meaning in our lives.
As I traveled the world, I was also navigating my own internal landscape, which led me naturally toward a lifelong path in personal development. I spent years immersed in the study of psychology and Gestalt therapy, seeking to understand the common threads that connect us all and how we might live more vibrantly. Goddess Retreats is the outward manifestation of that exploration. It was a beautiful, full-circle moment that brought me back to Bali as an adult, allowing me to synthesize my love for global discovery with my passion for helping others navigate their own paths of growth.
For me, this business is a creative expression of the belief that our external and internal journeys are inextricably linked. By providing a retreat space for women to step away from their daily lives, I am inviting them to become explorers of their own potential. We are in a state of continual evolution at every age, and I find my greatest joy in facilitating the moments where a woman can explore her highest self and her highest potential, which I call the goddess within.
What is a typical day like for you?
My day begins early, usually when I open my eyes at 5:00 a.m. to the first light of the morning. Over the last decade, my greatest personal exploration has been into the world of biohacking, as I have become dedicated to ensuring I lead with maximum clarity and vitality. I follow a series of science-backed protocols, including immediate exposure to morning sunlight and a specific regimen of supplements and peptides to prime my system for the day ahead. I have found that I must program my physical movement first thing in the morning so that it never has a chance to be pushed aside by the inevitable demands of the business day. Three mornings a week, I am in the ocean as the sun rises, either surfing solo or alongside our Surf Goddess guests, and on the other days, I work with my personal trainer to build the strength that sustains my busy lifestyle.
I transition into my role as a founder around 8:00 a.m. My most productive window for the intense demands of business administration and marketing is from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. I practice intermittent fasting during these hours, which I find keeps my mental focus exceptionally sharp for the high-priority decisions I need to make. I am a very hands-on leader and the lead architect of every aspect of Goddess Retreats. From managing our global marketing and social media to designing the decor and developing our workshop schedules, I touch every single detail. This time is dedicated to ensuring that everything we offer is something I would truly love to experience myself, making sure the heart and soul of our retreats remain as vibrant today as they were when we first began over twenty years ago.
After breaking my fast at 1:00 p.m., my afternoon takes on a more fluid, free-flow quality. This is the time when I immerse myself in the heartbeat of the retreats. I spend time with our guests who have returned from their morning outings and treatments to ensure their experience is meeting our high standards, and I work closely with my team on logistics. I also make time for movement in a different form, often playing a game of padel tennis in the late afternoon for a social and athletic release. If I am feeling more low-key, I will instead schedule a massage, bodywork, or other self-care treatments.
As someone who has been a pioneer in this industry for decades, I know that longevity requires a regulated nervous system. My evenings are strictly dedicated to recovery and connection. I enjoy preparing a fresh meal and finishing my early dinner by 5:00 p.m., which allows my body ample time to digest before rest. The hours that follow are a gentle wind-down where I cycle through an infrared sauna and a cold plunge, followed by a session of red light therapy and a simple sequence of Yin Yoga and Kriya meditation. I truly love the time I spend playing with my dogs, and we often “Netflix and chill” with a favorite series. I am usually in bed by 8:00 p.m. and asleep by 9:00 p.m. to ensure I get the full rest required to wake up energized and ready to lead once again.
If you had one piece of advice for someone just starting out, what would it be?
If I could offer just one piece of wisdom to a woman beginning her journey today, it would be this: the most effortless and rewarding way to live is from a place of authenticity and integrity. This means ensuring that your inner world is reflected in your outer actions, and that there is no discrepancy between your thoughts, your words, and your deeds. I call this living in natural alignment, and the more you can cultivate this state, the easier and more pleasurable both your life and your business become.
This is true for everyone, but it is especially vital for those of us who choose to lead. If you are not in alignment with the service or product you are offering, your work will eventually feel like a struggle. Genuinely successful businesses are often those that simply solve a problem or create a beautiful experience that makes people feel good in a genuine way. As a leader, you want that offering to be a close reflection of what you personally love and what you would want to experience yourself.
Prior to founding Goddess Retreats, I worked in many different roles, but the greatest joy of building my own business has been creating the exact environment I craved for myself. Because I have poured my passion and enthusiasm into creating a space that nurtures women physically, emotionally, and spiritually, the business has become a natural outpouring of who I am. When you work from this place, there is no internal resistance, only a sense of creative flow. This alignment has made my work infinitely exciting and rewarding for almost a quarter of a century.
Inevitably, every business faces challenges, and it is in those moments that your love for what you do becomes your greatest asset. If you truly love your mission and it is in harmony with your soul, you will have the resilience to navigate any obstacle. When you lead from alignment, you find both professional success and a deep sense of personal fulfillment, ensuring that your work remains a source of joy for years to come.
Does your company help the community where it is located?
As a founder, I have always believed that true success is measured by the positive ripples we create in the world around us. From the very beginning, I have practiced the spiritual principle of tithing, as I feel that a business cannot be truly successful if it does not give back to the community that sustains it. This commitment is a core pillar of Goddess Retreats, and it ensures that our growth is always in alignment with the well-being of the people and the land of Bali.
Our commitment to the community begins with our team, whom I consider to be my extended family. In an industry where turnover is often high, I am deeply proud that most of our staff members have been with us for over a decade. In fact, we still have original employees who started this journey with me twenty-three years ago. We take great pride in providing a supportive environment where our team can thrive, and we often hire graduates from the BaliWISE program, which we also supported through being a primary donor, which empowers young Balinese women through hospitality and life-skills training.
Beyond our immediate family, we partner with several remarkable organizations to support the most vulnerable. Since 2005, we have supported the Smile Foundation to provide life-changing craniofacial surgeries, and we work closely with the Ika Foundation to fund cancer screenings and nutrition for children undergoing treatment. During the challenging years of the pandemic, when our property was forced to close, we transformed our space into the Goddess Kitchen. We dedicated our resources to preparing and delivering fresh meals and groceries to single mothers and vulnerable families who were left without a safety net, ensuring that the heart of our retreat continued to beat even when our doors were shut.
We also feel a profound responsibility to be stewards of the Balinese landscape and culture. On our property, we have integrated permaculture farming and continue to cultivate our own traditional rice paddies, which produce over sixteen hundred units of rice annually. This practice not only provides meaningful work for local farmers but also helps to preserve the beautiful, natural landscape from overdevelopment. Furthermore, my personal love for animals led us to ongoing donations and support to organizations of BAWA and Little Steps Matter, which do vital work in animal rescue and sterilization across the island.
Ultimately, our relationship with Bali is one of deep respect and reciprocity. We strive to honor the philosophy of Tri Hita Karana by maintaining harmony with the people and the environment that make our retreats so magical. By grounding our business in these values, we ensure that every woman who joins us is not only investing in her own well-being but is also contributing to a cycle of kindness and support that uplifts the entire community.
Every entrepreneur has a goal and a problem they’re trying to solve. What was the inspiration that started your journey?
I often say that from a very young age, I was searching for the instruction book for life. Growing up in so many different cultures, I was fascinated by the incredible variety of ways people found happiness and a sense of belonging. I wanted to know how to live well and, more importantly, how to feel truly comfortable in one’s own skin.
In time, I came to understand that the perceived mystery of life is actually a beautiful adventure of self-discovery, navigated through both internal and external exploration. I realized that none of us received a manual at birth because we each carry our own unique blueprint within us. What sparks my spirit may not necessarily spark yours, and much of the joy of our existence is found in the patient uncovering of what resonates specifically with our own souls.
From an entrepreneurial standpoint, I always knew I would eventually run my own business. Even during my first jobs in high school, I felt a deep-seated need for independence and the freedom to do things my own way. I have always held a deep respect for those who find their purpose and stability within a traditional career, yet I realized early in my journey that my own spirit required a different kind of creative independence. I found myself naturally drawn to a path that allowed for more exploration and personal risk, as I have always felt most alive when navigating the unknown on my own terms.
For me, freedom, curiosity, and courage are the three values I hold above all others. I felt that if I was searching so intensely for these answers of empowerment and self-knowledge, then other women must be searching for them too. When I began to find those answers through my own life as a “great experiment,” I became incredibly excited to share them.
The core question I set out to solve remains the same today: how do you create a life that brings you genuine happiness, and how do you nurture a self that is the fullest expression of your soul? While every woman’s blueprint is unique, I have found that there is a common ground of eternal truths that help us find our way back to our true nature. Goddess Retreats is the physical manifestation of that search, providing a sanctuary where the external joy of travel and the internal journey of self-realization can finally meet.
I believe the reason we have been so successful for nearly a quarter of a century is that there is a profound truth in what we share. We are not just offering a holiday, but rather an intentional environment for women to engage with their own blueprints and rediscover their inner goddess. It has been an infinitely rewarding journey to turn my own personal quest for meaning into a service that helps thousands of other women find theirs.
How do you prioritize self-care and well-being while managing the demands of your business?
This is truly the question of the ages for entrepreneurs, and I have spent over two decades navigating this balance. I will be the first to admit that I did not always have the clarity I have today. In those early years, the sheer excitement of building a vision is a powerful fuel, but that constant demand and the feeling that you must be available at all hours is incredibly depleting. Before you know it, you can hit a wall and find yourself completely burned out, which is why I have had to learn the absolute necessity of boundaries.
I have learned that the different parts of your life cannot simply bleed into each other without consequence. If you do not apply the same amount of intention and thought to scheduling your personal time as you do your professional life, your well-being will inevitably be squeezed out. There is always going to be an endless stream of urgent emails, a team member who needs an immediate answer, or a complex logistical puzzle to solve. If you try to fit your life into the gaps of the day, you will find that those gaps simply vanish.
The only practical solution I have found is to literally book my personal life into my calendar. I have to show up for my own well-being with the same commitment I bring to a team meeting, the same dedication I have for our guests, and the same focus I give to the work itself. It is about recognizing that my mental and physical health are the actual foundation of the company. If I allow myself to reach the point of burnout, I cannot lead my team well and, perhaps most importantly for a founder, my creativity simply dies. Protecting my time is a vital business practice that ensures I can continue to lead with the passion and innovation that started this journey.
TIPS on how I practically do this:
Usually on a Friday, I review my calendar to intentionally design the structure of the weeks ahead. I treat my personal life with the same level of respect as my professional obligations by using specific categories to ensure nothing is squeezed out by the demands of the business. My calendar includes non-negotiable blocks for work administration and urgent meetings, but it also features dedicated tags for personal administration, exercise, health, and self-care. Most importantly, I explicitly schedule time for my friends and leisure. By blocking these into my week as non-negotiable commitments, I ensure that the things that fill my well are given the priority they deserve, rather than simply hoping they will fit into the gaps of a busy day. If we do not schedule our lives with intention, the endless stream of “urgent” tasks will always find a way to take center stage.
While we often imagine that we want constant novelty, our nervous systems actually thrive on a sense of predictable order. I have found that maintaining a regulated daily flow is the most effective way to manage the high energy of running retreats. I wake, eat, and sleep at the same time each day, which provides a grounding pace that my body trusts. I have even applied this philosophy to my wardrobe through what I call a “maximalist-minimalist” approach. Over the years, I have learned what I truly love and have significantly edited down my closet. I have chosen to deeply invest in specific pieces that I truly, maximally love and feel great in. This is not about deprivation, but about the joy of only surrounding myself with items that resonate with my spirit. By creating simplified choices, I eliminate decision fatigue and preserve my mental energy for the creative work that matters most.
To balance the digital demands of being a founder, I also practice a weekly digital fast where I put my phone on airplane mode for several hours (and not just at bedtime). This allows me to step out of “alert mode” and into a creative flow, whether that is through surfing, walking my dogs in nature, or simply having a coffee with a friend. When I consciously put my phone away so that I am not tempted to check it, I find that there is a sense of everything is urgent, and the pressure of constant connectivity.
What would you consider your biggest accomplishment and why?
When I look back over the two decades since I founded Surf Goddess Retreats, I find that my greatest accomplishment is not a single moment, but rather a beautiful ripple effect. In the beginning, my mission was quite simple. I wanted to introduce women to the spirit of surfing and create a space where the ocean felt accessible, easy, and welcoming.
Being a pioneer in the women’s wellness movement has allowed me to witness a profound shift in the world. I remember when seeing another woman in the lineup was a rarity, and now, I see the water filled with our collective energy. We have had the honor of welcoming over eighteen thousand women to our retreats, and the most rewarding part of this journey has been the lasting connections. I have remained in contact with many of our guests for decades, watching as their experiences with us changed the very trajectory of their lives.
At the heart of what we do is a dedication to personal expansion and the awakening of the inner goddess. I believe that when a woman steps into her highest, best self, it benefits everyone around her. My path has always been guided by the mantra Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu, which is a dedication to the happiness and freedom of all beings. To see my personal mission bear such fruit and to watch these dreams become a reality for so many women is truly the greatest honor of my life.
We all face challenges. Looking back, what have been some of the biggest challenges and obstacles you’ve had to navigate?
Looking back over the decades, I believe the greatest challenge of being a pioneer is that there is no existing map to follow. When I first started, the surf industry was a very different landscape. It was a space where women were often an afterthought, and the support offered by major brands felt quite superficial. I quickly realized that I would not be invited into the existing rooms, so I decided to build my own.
I chose to focus on creating a woman-run business specifically for women, which felt infinitely more authentic than anything else available at the time. There is a certain freedom in realising you do not need the traditional industry’s validation to succeed. By building what I think of as a “parallel economy,” we were able to define our own values and support our community on our own terms.
Beyond the industry culture, the logistical hurdles were significant. We launched in 2003, which was a world of dial-up internet and rudimentary infrastructure in places like Sri Lanka and Indonesia. This was long before the convenience of Facebook or Instagram, so we had to build our reputation through genuine connections and word of mouth.
Of course, running a global retreat business means navigating the inevitable ebbs and flows of travel, including the profound challenges of the recent pandemic. Each of these obstacles has only served to strengthen my resolve. They taught me that when you are fueled by a deep sense of purpose, you can navigate even the most uncertain waters and come out stronger on the other side.
Can you share some of the most important lessons you’ve learned from your successes and failures in business?
Success itself is a delicate dance between bold risk-taking and steady discipline. You must be willing to leap, of course, but you should also have the wisdom to examine every angle before your feet leave the ground. When a path proves to be the wrong one, the greatest skill is the ability to pivot quickly. I have learned to hold my ideas lightly. If something does not unfold as I envisioned, I either refine it or I let it go so that I can focus my energy where it truly bears fruit.
Business, much like the ocean, has its oscillations between the calm lulls and sets of challenging waves. With time, you simply become a more skilled surfer. I make a conscious effort to invest my energy into efforts that provide the best results, rather than struggling to make something happen when perhaps it’s simply not meant to be. It is about knowing when to paddle hard and when to wait for the next right wave to carry you forward.
What initiatives or actions do you believe are crucial for fostering a more supportive and inclusive business environment for women?
The profound secret I discovered through my journey of starting Goddess Retreats is that, as an entrepreneur, you do not need to wait for a seat at the table. No one is going to come along and issue an invitation for you. When I first started, the environment was often indifferent or even unsupportive to women, yet I found that it actually did not matter. I realized that I did not need validation or sponsorship from the existing structures that were there. Instead, I focused entirely on my audience and the women I was meant to serve.
Our inclusivity is born from the community we build. It was my guests and my clients who provided the support and the recognition that the broader industry initially withheld. By consistently showing up for one another, women have created their own parallel economy. We have made ourselves impossible to ignore simply by thriving on our own terms. I also believe there is an inherent authenticity in a business owned and operated by women who offer goods and services for women. There is a natural, intuitive understanding of our needs that simply cannot be replicated. When we choose to support other women-owned businesses, we are doing more than making a purchase. We are fostering an ecosystem where our voices are the ones that carry weight. This cycle of mutual support is what transforms the business landscape, moving us from seeking inclusion to leading the way.
What advice would you give to a new business owner? Or to your younger self?
While the world often speaks of entrepreneurship as a path to newfound freedom, I have found it to be something much more intimate and all-consuming. If I could offer a piece of wisdom to my younger self, or to any woman standing at the threshold of a new venture, it would be to prepare yourself to embrace this entire process with a sense of joy and a profound resilience. The truth is that success requires you to be deeply, perhaps even singularly, in love with your mission. This is not a role you can simply step away from at the end of the day; it will surely occupy your heart and your thoughts in every quiet moment, and that level of devotion is exactly what allows a vision to thrive.
The nature of this path is that it is not something that can be neatly contained within traditional hours or set aside for the weekend. It is far more than a job; it is a way of being, an expression of one’s own essence, and a continuous act of creation. This level of emotional attachment is exactly what differentiates an entrepreneur from an employee. It requires a rare combination of immense courage and perhaps a necessary pinch of madness to bring your vision to life.
How do you set your business apart from others in your industry?
What truly distinguishes our retreats is the deep intentionality woven into every single element of the experience. I have designed our retreats to ensure that every detail serves a specific purpose in a woman’s journey of expansion. We move beyond the idea of quick fixes or leader-focused models to provide a curated environment where the program itself becomes the catalyst for change.
For instance, our decision to include unlimited spa treatments is not merely about luxury; it is a deliberate psychological tool. I have observed that many women carry a subconscious guilt when it comes to investing in their own nourishment. By making the spa all-inclusive, we remove the internal barrier and the need for a woman to negotiate with herself over the cost of her own care. This allows her to move past that resistance and fully surrender to the process, which in turn facilitates a profound physiological reset of her nervous system. When the program supports the surrender, the results are both immediate and lasting.
We also focus heavily on the power of an embodied, experiential journey. Rather than discussing abstract theories of empowerment, we provide a space where these concepts are lived. Our retreats are designed to facilitate an authentic social atmosphere where the masks of daily life can safely fall away. In this environment, every woman discovers that she is both a student and a teacher. She learns that her own lived experience is a form of wisdom that can support others, just as she can find support in the collective. By the time a guest leaves, she carries a sense of ownership over her transformation, knowing that she has the tools to navigate her world with her own inner goddess as her guide.
What are the three most important habits to be a successful high performer or leader?
Plotting the Course with “In-Tuition”
The most vital habit for any leader is the practice of developing a deep, unwavering sense of “inside tuition,” which is essentially your own inner teacher. To be the true captain of your own ship, you must learn to listen to this internal guidance rather than searching for answers in the noise of the outside world. I have found that a daily habit of checking in with my own intuition, or my inner goddess, is essential for steady leadership. This intuition acts as a constant Polestar, allowing you to plot a course that remains authentically yours. When you are directed by your inner compass, you are no longer at the mercy of the shifting winds of external approval or the inevitable storms of the industry. You remain the master of your journey, steering with clarity and purpose.
The Frictionless Power of Radical Authenticity
The second habit is a commitment to radical authenticity. When you are truly authentic, there is no friction between your inner world and your outer expression. You are not burning up precious energy trying to be someone you are not, which makes the journey of entrepreneurship both easier and more joyful. This natural enthusiasm creates a magnetic attraction; you begin to draw in the team members and the customers who truly resonate with your business. Because there is no misalignment to navigate, you create a clear and powerful flow that can really propel your business forward.
Top-Down Vitality
The third is the essential habit of prioritising your physical and mental health because a business is truly an extension of the leader, psychologically, creatively, and energetically. From the top down, the energy you bring dictates the entire culture. If you neglect your own well-being, your creativity begins to fade and your enthusiasm inevitably wanes, which then ripples through every part of your organization. I have learned that looking after myself is the most profound way to ensure the business thrives. Ultimately, a business is a reflection of the person at the helm, so you must get to know yourself deeply and care for yourself with intention. Your vision will only ever be as healthy as you are.
Do you have a favorite quote or motto that inspires you?
I have walked the path of a yogi for many years now, and because of that, my guiding motto is a traditional Sanskrit mantra, Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu. It is a beautiful invocation that translates to:
“May all beings everywhere be happy and free, and may the thoughts, words, and actions of my own life contribute in some way to that happiness and to that freedom for all.”
This mantra is my intention and my prayer every single morning. It informs every decision I make, from the way we curate our retreat programs to the smallest details of our guest experience. My deepest desire is to create beautiful, nurturing spaces where women can reconnect with their highest selves, but this intention extends far beyond the retreats themselves. I strive to bring this spirit into every action of my life, hoping to offer some form of happiness and freedom to everyone I encounter, from my dedicated team members to our guests and everyone I meet along the way. In many ways, my business is a natural outpouring of this philosophy. It is, quite truly, my yoga practice in action.
The Radical Act of Living From the Inside Out
To “own it” is to claim the quiet, steady authority of your own inner voice. For much of my journey, I lived from the outside in, searching for a manual for living that was never actually written. I have learned that the most radical act a woman can take is to quiet the noise of societal expectations and begin to rely on her own internal compass. When we stop looking for outside permission, we move from being a passenger in our own lives to being the one who truly holds the map.
At Goddess Retreats, our mission has always been to awaken, inspire, and celebrate the goddess within. To me, the “goddess” is simply that wise, higher self who knows she is lovable, knows how to care for herself, and understands her own unique blueprint. My greatest achievement has been ending the internal war and cultivating a deep, enduring friendship with myself. When we stop fighting to fit into a mold that does not suit us, we find an incredible peace. I invite every woman to stop looking for external validation and start living from the inside out. It is in this alignment that we truly find our highest and best life.
