It’s not really a secret but it’s effect on productivity is. One of the easiest ways to be more productive is to simplify your life. We often make areas of our life far more complicated than they need to be. My mission for you is to simplify your life in 2014 so that increased productivity becomes easier and eventually a way of life.
Here’s some ideas on what you can do:
- Learn to turn off – for some of us this is so hard (myself included). I love learning and could work happily work all day and night. But, it means there’s not switch off time. Yes, reading is relaxing for me, but when I’m reading a business book it sparks ideas and gets my brain going, not exactly what you’re looking for just before sleep! I’ve taken too watching tv series on Netflix at night to truly relax, no ipad, no multitasking while watching. Or reading a fiction book.
- Say no – we tend to overload our schedules because we feel guilty saying no. Get over it. Too many yes’s create too much stress. Remember that you are just as important as the person requesting something. Be kind to yourself, say no. It might only be two letters but it takes practice. Practice lots.
- Let go of toxic relationships – free time is limited. Do you really want to spend time with someone who doesn’t make you feel good about yourself? It’s not worth it, because ongoing stress caused by relationships like these impedes your overall happiness.
- Stop overscheduling – Activities are great aren’t they? Yes, until they are taxing you so much it’s exhausting. If you feel like you’re continually running around overwhelmed with the scheduled items for the rest of the week, just stop. You are in control of what makes it into your schedule. And for those with kids that scoff at this idea because you’re are running around after your kids, let me ask you this, are your kids overscheduled as well? Kids have so many opportunities available to them that it can be tempting not to miss out on any. But, too many can leave kids exhausted. I remember a childhood of a few activities and lots of play time. Does this not foster creativity and imagination? Or perhaps its as simple as sharing the “taxi” load by car pooling?
Simple things such as those above can have a big impact on your productivity. Let simplicity be your new motto for 2014 and I promise you the rewards will be increased productivity.
What can you simplify in your life for a more productive 2014?
