As a business owner one of the most important AND the most frustrating parts of your day to day activities is marketing. For many of us – when it comes to marketing – we end up feeling confused, frustrated and disappointed.

Maybe you’ve invested money into trainings or blueprints that are “guaranteed” to produce the results you envision.

However …

Often these investments fall short.

So what’s going on? Is it you? Is it your business model?

The good new is – we’ve all been there at one time or another. So you aren’t alone.

The other piece of good news is – you can easily turn this around.


By tapping into your own marketing genius – yes really – you have a marketing genius inside of you – you just need to find her 🙂

5 Steps to Becoming Your Own Marketing Expert

1. Put down the blueprint

Okay so here is the thing – if you’ve been in business for any length of time, you probably have an accumulation of blueprints and trainings sitting in your library. You might pull a little from here and a little from there. And then you buy another one – so you change direction and jump on the next shiny object. I know when I’m doing this because I kinda feel like a dog – unfocused and moving from one exciting thing to the next.

So what I’m encouraging you to do is to put them ALL down. Commit to putting them aside for 90 days.

2. Be still your mind

After you make the commitment to put aside the noise and distractions – now the fun begins. This starts with learning how to tap into your inner marketing guide (believe me – she is there)!

Over the next 90 days make a commitment to quiet your mind and listen to your guidance. At first this might be tough – but try a minute or two to start. Ask a question to your inner guide and quiet your mind to listen to the answer. When fear, what ifs or how to’s pop into your head – notice them and watch them drift by. Be curious about what comes up for you.

3. Feelings matter

So here’s the thing about marketing – what you put out there has to feel good to you. It needs to be authentic and YOU need to be excited about sharing your message. If you have something that doesn’t feel right, then it won’t feel good to those receiving the message. As you gather your inner guidance – notice what feels right and good and move ahead with that – this is a great place to start!

4. Remove all attachment

Okay so this is a toughie – our businesses our are babies. We want to be successful, right? So when we put our marketing out there, we want to see results. But the truth is that some things will work and some things will not. For you to maximize your marketing efforts, you need to stay unattached to whether it works or not. Remember it is all part of the learning. From the moment you put it out there – even though it feels good and you love it – remove your attachment to the results. Just let them be …

5. Test and retest

Because you’ve removed your attachment to the outcome, you are able to gather your results. Look at them objectively and make tweaks when needed. If something is less than satisfying – try making a tweak and testing that. Sometimes the tweak can be a simple change in image or headline. And other times you’ll discover that you need to try something completely different. The point is that as a business owner we are constantly testing and retesting to find out what works.

Here’s the thing about marketing – it will always be a part of your business. So you might as well learn to love it and that starts with YOU!

    So true, Gretchen, and so reassuring. For a while I thought you had actually been reading my thoughts … I agree, to some extent you have to unlearn what all the marketing gurus are preaching. Sometimes I feel that they have all read the same book and are simply rehashing what others have said before them without even trying to give it a new twist. For me, the most important component is to be yourself and to do what feels right. Thanks for the encouragement. Has come at the right time. HUGS <3
