When we are stressed, we become less effective with out time. Our mind and energy is being stolen away by something that it playing on our mind. For professional working women, that can also originate from dealing with negative work environments or people. A toxic work environment can be highly stressful. Finding systems, tools and strategies to deal with negativity can actually improve your productivity.
Trapped in a Cycle
To deal with negativity, we first have to consciously take a step back, to practice some mindfulness in our business environment. We need to be consciously aware of the cycle of communication. My behaviour will impact upon you. It’s likely that it will change the way you feel about yourself, or it will change the way you feel about me. Consequently, this will influence how you respond to me. This is your behaviour, this is what I observe about you. Your behaviour will now impact on me. It will change the way I feel about you, or it will change the way I feel about myself. I might find you aggressive, or I might feel intimated by you. But ultimately, how I feel about your behaviour is directly influenced by my very own behaviour. So based on how you behave and how this makes me feel, I behave a particular way, and so the cycle continues.
Tips for Managing Negativity.
Watch your Breathing.

Detaching
- Take yourself out of that environment. Immediately detach yourself. If you need to go and make yourself a cup of tea or go the bathroom, this can be a good reason to leave your work station or desk. Try to find a space where you can be alone.
- Ground yourself. Consciously slow down your breathing and remember ‘low and slow’. Do you need to drop your shoulders?
- Visualise that person’s negativity sitting on you. It’s thick and revolting like stinky mud. Start flicking your fingers, shaking your hands and feet and releasing that negativity. Imagine that you are flicking off that goop, the yucky muck just falling off you. In fact, the flicking of hands is a universal practice of energy healers and spiritual healers to dispel and release any of the ‘poison’ they have picked up during the healing process. You are physically and mentally making the commitment ‘your negativity is not going to be a part of me’.
Preparing Yourself with White Light
Frustration is a Mirror
No one can make us feel a certain way. We allow others to make us feel that way. If we feel angry, frustrated or hurt by the behaviour of others, these are our own feelings that we need to own.- Identify the feelings. What do these feelings say about us? What is it challenging in us?
Whatever it is that is annoying you is often something deep down inside that you resent about yourself. It is your shadow-self reflecting back on you. - What is it specifically we don’t like about the other person? Define it. Put a label on it.
- This step might be challenging. Think about moments in time when you have demonstrated this trait and who was there to witness it? Write down as many examples of this as you can, using just inititals to signify the event and the witness. This is a cognitive process to validate this event, you don’t need to re-read or recall this writing.
- Now write down ways that this person’s actions or behaviour has served you. For example, is it a mistake you won’t repeat, has it made you reconsider the way you do things or has it made you more resilient?
