Get to Know DOMI Founder and Designer Chloé D

Chloé D has always seen fashion as a powerful tool for self-expression and societal change. Creativity has been at her core, from her childhood watching her mother backstage perform as a professional background singer to going to Spelman College in Atlanta, where she was introduced to a new level of fashion.

During the GLOBAL pandemic of 2020, DOMI by Chloé emerged as a black-owned, woman-owned clothing brand. DOMI radiates luxury, timelessness, and sophistication for both men and women, offering intricately crafted standalone pieces alongside carefully curated capsule collections.

Despite the challenges many emerging designers face, Chloé and her team remained determined to establish a brand with a meaningful purpose. Today, as an entrepreneur, mother, and wife, Chloé’s brand is experiencing steady growth and has attracted a like-minded community that resonates with DOMI’s message.

It sounds like you have an amazing story to share! Please tell us more about yourself DOMI.

Hello, my name is Chloé, the founder and designer of the fashion brand, DOMI. I grew up in New Jersey in a small town called Cliffwood on the Jersey Shore. Creativity has always been a part of my life since I was a little girl. My mother was a professional singer in a gospel group and had a singing background for Aretha Franklin, Mariah Carey, and the list goes on.

I was always around performing arts, and my mother always made sure that I had different creative outlets. Even though my major in college was in STEM, I always had a passion for the arts. After getting accepted into Spelman College in Atlanta, my life changed. I was introduced to their very infamous fashion shows during homecoming. Participating in these fashion shows, I got into modeling and began helping with styling and choreography. By doing these things, I was really able to find myself and my talents.

I would like to give a shout-out to Spelman College because they don’t even realize how much of a creative space they produce for their students. I am forever grateful for that. In Atlanta, I continued to keep this passion of mine alive and helped photographers behind the scenes and in front of the camera. Despite my career path, I promised to nurture and maintain my passion. And now we are here, DOMI by Chloé

What are the three most important habits to be a successful entrepreneur?

So, when it comes to work, I’m all about putting in the effort. I’ve got an insane work ethic that keeps me motivated. Let me give you an example: I run DOMI by Chloé, but many people don’t know that I’m also a mother and wife balancing it all. I even relaunched the brand just days before giving birth. But that’s just one part of the picture. In addition to running my business, I’m deeply involved in the film industry, handling production wardrobes. I’m also a creative strategist for an advertising agency, working with some of the largest pharmaceutical brands. It’s a busy schedule, but I thrive on it because it aligns with my values of making a difference and helping those who are often overlooked.

Having a solid work ethic is definitely my number one priority.

The second trait is being passionate. You know, when it comes to passion, I’m all in. Seriously, you might catch me getting so into a conversation about my brand, career, family, or even my favorite film that you’ll see my veins popping! I believe in giving everything I’ve got to whatever I’m doing. Sure, it can be a struggle sometimes, but it’s all or nothing for me.

Loyalty is the third. When it comes to loyalty, it’s a big deal for me. Especially when it comes to shaping my brand, you’ll see how tight-knit my connections are with everyone involved. I don’t just see them as colleagues – they’re my friends. I make sure to check in on them, see how they’re doing, and offer any support they might need on their own journeys.

I want the brand to be more than just a workplace; it’s like a canvas where everyone can bring their unique touch and creativity. I genuinely believe that’s how we produce the most amazing work—when people feel valued and encouraged to be themselves.

So, my loyalty isn’t just about standing by someone; it’s about believing in their potential and what they can contribute. It’s a core part of who I am and shines through in everything I do.

Does your company help the community where it is located?

At DOMI, we love collaborating with skilled artisans from marginalized communities right here in New York. It’s not just about their craft; it’s about honoring their unique contributions and giving them the spotlight they deserve. We believe in lifting each other up and creating something special together. So, when you support DOMI, you’re not just buying clothes; you’re supporting a community of incredible artisans and their craft.

Every entrepreneur has a goal and problem they’re trying to solve. What was the inspiration that started your journey?

When I launched my brand, my goal was to show that fashion can make a positive impact. It’s not just about clothes; it’s about creating an immersive experience that blends fashion, art, and music.

I started DOMI with a clear mission: to go beyond fashion and inspire people to express themselves authentically.

Diversity and empowerment are key for us. We celebrate individuality by featuring male and female models of all shapes, sizes, and backgrounds in our campaigns and on our team. At DOMI, inclusivity is a priority, making fashion accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

We also make sure to prioritize ethical standards when choosing where to source materials. When it comes to everything from our fabrics to where our clothes are made, we stay local. And by local, I mean right here in New York City, in the garment district. We partner with a cozy little mom-and-pop shop for all our production needs.

From pattern development to grading and production, everything is done with care right here. Sure, it might take a bit longer to get things rolling, but that’s because I’m all about keeping my team happy and healthy. I believe that when our team feels good making these garments, it shines through when our customers wear them.

How do you prioritize self-care and well-being while managing the demands of your business?

Let me tell you, finding balance as a mom, wife, business owner, and all-around hustler is no joke! But for me, prioritizing self-care and well-being is an absolute must. It’s all about carving out those precious moments, even in the midst of a hectic schedule.

Transparently, I’m still trying to find balance and prioritize myself throughout this chapter. A few things I do just to be present and give myself some TLC are playing with my daughter, cooking, going to my strength and training classes, watching a movie with my husband, or just going to the Shore to be with my family. I am learning that these small things are a necessity for me to be the best version of myself. When I take care of myself, I’m better equipped to take care of my business and my family. I’ve accepted that I can’t do everything perfectly, and that’s okay! I’m trying my best.

How do you set your business apart from others in your industry?

DOMI is more than just a clothing brand – it’s a story in motion. We’re all about showcasing our creativity in action, which is why we call it the “world of DOMI.”

We love pulling back the curtain and giving people a glimpse into our creative process. From behind-the-scenes shots, makeup artists, and hair stylists to models in action and me directing the shoot, we show it all. It’s in that rawness where the real inspiration comes through.

We want DOMI to be a source of inspiration for others, not just in how our garments look but also in how they make people feel. That’s what sets DOMI apart. Our brand tells a story, and every piece we put out into the world is a part of that narrative. It’s about inviting our customers to see themselves not just wearing our clothes but also being a part of our creative journey.

Do you have a favorite quote or motto that inspires you?

You know, I think a lot of my fearlessness comes from my mom. She’s always been one to say, “I dare you,” pushing me to strive for greatness. I’ll never forget when I texted her about wanting to start a fashion brand, and her response was, “I dare you to be great.” I took her word and ran with it. Since then, I’ve been progressing. Thank you, Mom!
