You need to have a clear head when you run a business, and that can be a hard thing to achieve when there’s so much to think about and so many little things to tick off your to-do list (not to mention the much bigger things that are sure to be on your mind all the time). Although that’s only natural, the problem is that when your mind is full, it can be hard to make good decisions and to know where you’re going or what to do next, so you might find yourself going around in circles
Is there a solution or is that how all business owner live their lives? You’ll be glad to hear there is a solution, and although it might be an unusual one, it’s one that really does work once you get into it – you need to be more mindful.
Mindfulness is the practice of living in the moment, in the present, and being aware of your thoughts, feelings, and surroundings without judging them – you just acknowledge them and move on. When it comes to business, this can be a wonderful thing to do because your mind will be a lot clearer and you’ll be less stressed, so decision-making and problem-solving become a lot easier, and running a business is less of a chore – it might even become fun. So with that in mind, here are some tips to help you be more mindful when you run a business because as good an idea as it is, it can be hard to get started. Read on to find out more.

Start The Day Right
If you’re going to be mindful, you need to start each day as you mean to go on, so set your alarm ten or fifteen minutes early and use that extra time to get yourself into the right frame of mind for the rest of the day. That could be doing some meditation or yoga, for example, or perhaps you want to calm your mind with a game of sudoku or you could do some journaling. Whatever it is, do it first thing and you’ll be calm with a clear mind to start the rest of your day, and that can make a massive difference in how that day ends up going.
What’s great about this idea is that it’s easy to do. Yes, getting up a little earlier can feel like a big ask, but once you’ve done it a few times, it’s going to be second nature and you won’t even think about it. Then, as you get into your mindfulness practice for the day, you’ll start to see what a difference it makes in general, giving you more inspiration and motivation to keep doing it, which makes the entire issue of waking up early a non-problem.
Practice Mindful Listening
How often do you really listen to people? You might hear what they’re saying (sometimes), but hearing and listening are actually two different things, and understanding that difference is crucial – but listening mindfully is even more important.
Mindful listening is all about really and fully concentrating on what the speaker is saying without interrupting and without even planning what you’re going to say next (which is something you’ll probably do more often than you realize, but which just means you’re not listening one hundred percent to what’s being said). Now that might sound easy, but believe us, it’s really not – mindful listening is something you need to practice to get right because most of the time, it’s just not how humans behave. Everyone wants to get their point across, which can often mean talking over people or only feigning interest in what’s being said, so we miss the point and that can cause its own issues.
As a business owner, the fact is that mindful listening not only forces you to slow down, but also means you have far better communication with clients, customers, partners, suppliers, and employees, which can lead to more success.
Take Mindful Breaks
Working non-stop from the start to the end of the day means you’ll get everything done and you definitely won’t feel any ill effects, right? Wrong! Working non-stop from the start to the end of the day is a terrible idea that’s going to have a negative effect on your business and on your own health (both mental and physical). If you work without taking breaks, you’ll find your energy levels and productivity drop severely by the end of the day, so although you’re working long hours, you’re not getting all that much done, which is a waste of time and could be a problem for your business too – your customers aren’t going to be happy, are they?
That’s why taking mindful breaks is a good idea. You should step away from your desk every hour or so for just five or ten minutes, and although that might seem as though it’s going to add up to something that could be useful elsewhere, what it’s really going to add up to is a happier, more productive, more efficient you, and that’s exactly what your business needs. Consider incorporating a brief coffee ritual into your mindful breaks—taking the time to savor a freshly brewed cup can provide a moment of calm and rejuvenation, enhancing your overall productivity and focus throughout the day.
You’ll have noticed we didn’t just suggest you take breaks, but instead talked about mindful breaks, and that is crucial – taking a break and staying at your desk or just switching over to social media rather than your work isn’t the best use of your break time. Yes, it’s better than nothing, but it’s not the best – the best is to be mindful on your break. You can do any of the things we’ve mentioned above, from sudoku to meditation, or you can do something we’ve not talked about yet – as long as it means you’re not thinking of anything except what you’re doing and you’re not getting stressed out (which is the danger of social media, of course), then it’s a good idea; everyone’s idea of a mindful activity will be different, after all.
When you take these useful breaks, you can reset your mind and reduce your stress levels which can easily build up during the day before you even realize it, ensuring you can be much more productive and happier in your work.
