Tell us about how you got started and about each of your different businesses.
I’ve always been drawn to the dynamic world of tech and entrepreneurship. My journey began with a serendipitous opportunity at a tech startup, where my knack for languages and marketing landed me a role as a marketing intern. It was here that I discovered my passion for the intersection of technology and business.
My entrepreneurial journey has been a whirlwind of challenges and successes. I’ve co-founded exciting startups like Smarsy, where we introduced an innovative intelligent selfie mirror for cosmetic brands and retailers, and Liberrex, a SaaS system that streamlined virtual queue and reservation management for service businesses. Along the way, receiving endorsements from notable industry experts like Guy Kawasaki, Tim Draper, Gabriel Brack, and more has been incredibly validating. Each milestone has only fueled my drive to make a positive impact through technology.
In 2023, fueled by my passion for empowering small businesses and driven by a shared vision with my business partner Yvonne Teng, we embarked on the launch of Flashee. Flashee isn’t just another shopping app; it’s a revolutionary platform that harnesses the power of AI and social selling to connect conscious shoppers with small, mission-driven brands worldwide. Our innovative approach combines AI-powered recommendations, gamified rewards, and brand profiling to create a vibrant community for responsible consumers.
Flashee represents a commitment to supporting small businesses and empowering women in the tech industry. Together with Yvonne, we’re reshaping the retail landscape and paving the way for a more sustainable and inclusive future.
What inspired you to be an entrepreneur?
Well, the heart of my entrepreneurial journey beats with the rhythm of freedom. From a young age, I’ve yearned to carve my own path, to be the master of my destiny. But it’s not just about independence; it’s about passion too. I’ve always had a deep love for the world of fashion and beauty, seeing it as a canvas where I could paint my marketing expertise with hues of personal values and aspirations.
And then there’s the world of technology. Its dynamic nature, ever-evolving landscape, and perpetual energy have always captivated me. Delving into the tech sphere felt like a natural progression, offering not only opportunities for innovation but also a platform to guide and support others along their journeys.
So, entrepreneurship is more than just a journey to me; it’s a fusion of freedom, passion, and purpose. With each step forward, a new layer is added to the melody, crafting a symphony that resonates deeply within me.
What are you most proud of?
What I’m most proud of extends beyond mere successes; it encompasses my resilience in navigating failures. When Smarsy faced adversity during the pandemic, instead of conceding defeat, I pivoted, learning invaluable lessons in resilience and adaptability. These experiences shaped me as an entrepreneur, providing insights into retail, e-commerce, and the evolving tech landscape.
Furthermore, our current venture, Flashee, epitomizes our innovative tech approach. Leveraging AI and social selling, Flashee connects mission-driven brands with conscious shoppers globally, fostering a community-driven marketplace rooted in sustainability and social responsibility. It represents our commitment to pushing technological boundaries for positive change in retail.
How do you advocate for women and what more can be done?
As an entrepreneur, I’ve always been inspired by the journeys of remarkable women like Natalia Vodianova, Sampriti Bhattacharyya, Christine Tsai, and Maria Sharapova. Now, with resources at hand, I actively support aspiring female startups as an angel investor, particularly in the tech, fashion, and beauty sectors.
Personally, I advocate for women through mentorship programs and speaking engagements, aiming to uplift and amplify the voices of fellow female entrepreneurs. My passion lies in leading by example and creating opportunities for women to thrive in the tech industry.
Who are your mentors and how have they supported you?
Mentorship has played a crucial role in shaping my journey as an entrepreneur. Rather than waiting for advice to come my way, I actively seek it out from seasoned entrepreneurs in the field, connecting with them through communities like the 500 Global network. Their insights have been incredibly valuable, offering me different perspectives on overcoming challenges and spotting opportunities in the fast-paced world of business.
In my experience, mentors have provided invaluable support during challenging times, such as the setback I faced with Smarsy. Their guidance and encouragement helped me navigate the obstacles and emerge stronger than before. Their insights and advice enable me to learn from failures and leverage them as opportunities for growth.
Engaging with mentors has not only broadened my understanding of entrepreneurship but has also provided me with practical strategies for success. Whether it’s advice on scaling a startup or insights into industry trends, these mentorship relationships have been essential in helping me overcome obstacles and achieve my goals.
