Takeaways

  • Be Kind: It may sound simple, but kindness goes a long way. Don’t view every interaction as a transaction; instead, focus on helping others when you can.
  • Value Every Interaction: Treat every person you encounter as an equal, regardless of their role or status.
  • Stay True to Yourself: Even if others tell you this isn’t the traditional way to do business, staying true to your values can lead to success in unexpected ways. This approach has served me well countless times and reinforced my commitment to authenticity.

Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of working on large-scale campaigns across various channels and industries. This experience fueled my passion for innovation, driving me to continually seek out creative solutions that stand out in an ever-evolving landscape.

My journey in marketing has not only been about pushing my own boundaries but also about fostering a culture of excellence within my team. I discovered a deep passion for leadership, guiding and inspiring my team to become the best versions of themselves. Together, we strive to set new standards in the industry, blending creativity with strategic thinking to deliver exceptional results for our clients.

What made you decide to go into business for yourself?

Being in control of the creative process has always been a driving force for me. I wanted the freedom to deliver the best—whether it was crafting content, designing experiences, or executing campaigns. However, I often found myself constrained by traditional methods, limited by who I could collaborate with, or restricted in how I could bring a vision to life. This desire for creative freedom and excellence was a key motivator in founding my own agency.

I’ve been incredibly fortunate to build a network and team who share this passion for pushing boundaries and striving for greatness. Being in the driver’s seat has not only given me the ability to steer our projects in new and exciting directions but also empowered my team to exceed our own expectations. Together, we’ve been able to achieve more than I ever imagined, constantly pushing ourselves to new heights.

What are the three most important habits to be a successful entrepreneur?

I believe that true growth comes from recognizing that the journey never ends—no matter how far you’ve come, it always takes more effort, innovation, and commitment to reach the next level. This mindset drives me and my team to continuously evolve, pushing the boundaries of what we can achieve together.

If you had one piece of advice for someone just starting out, what would it be?

If I had one piece of advice for someone just starting out, it would be to embrace the importance of accountability. Take ownership of your actions, both successes and mistakes and use them as learning opportunities. Accountability is a powerful tool for personal and professional growth; it helps you identify areas where you need to improve, encourages continuous learning, and drives your evolution. By holding yourself accountable, you set a foundation for long-term success and resilience in your career.

Does your company help the community where it is located?

We strive to make a positive impact in every community we engage with. One of the ways we do this is by actively supporting and collaborating with other small, women-owned businesses in our projects. We’ve built our network around this principle, ensuring that wherever we operate, we prioritize working with fellow female entrepreneurs. This not only strengthens our community but also allows us to foster a supportive environment where women in business can thrive together.

Every entrepreneur has a goal and problem they’re trying to solve. What was the inspiration that started your journey?

The inspiration for starting my journey came from a pivotal moment when I found myself, along with another female executive, as the only women in a room full of male executives. Despite being the ones who developed all the ideas, action plans, and concepts, we weren’t given the opportunity to present our work or shape how our vision came to life. Instead, we had to water down our ideas to appease male leadership, without even the chance to speak up in meetings.

In that moment, my colleague joked that we should just start our own agency—and that idea stuck with me. It became the catalyst for creating a space where I could hire and promote women, fostering an environment of unity and empowerment. It’s not about women being better or smarter, but about ensuring that our voices are heard and valued equally.

What would you consider your biggest accomplishment and why?

I would consider our client roster to be our biggest accomplishment. Black Flamingo started as a Marketing Strategy consulting agency with just myself and one employee. For the first two years, we focused solely on consulting. However, two years ago, we made the decision to take on clients, and since then, we’ve had the privilege of working with incredible brands and even more remarkable client teams. This achievement has brought an immense sense of pride and accomplishment to myself and everyone who is part of Black Flamingo.

We all face challenges. Looking back, what have been some of the biggest challenges and obstacles you’ve had to navigate?

The marketing and execution side of things has always been the easiest part for me. What I didn’t fully anticipate were the challenges that come with the business ownership side. Navigating the complexities of accounting, IT, and other operational aspects has been one of the biggest challenges I’ve faced. Figuring out every element of these areas, often without prior experience, has definitely been the toughest part of my journey and the quickest to outsource.

I believe that true growth comes from recognizing that the journey never ends—no matter how far you’ve come, it always takes more effort, innovation, and commitment to reach the next level.

What challenges have you faced in the workplace, especially your experience in male-dominated environments?

One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced in the workplace, particularly in male-dominated environments, has been ensuring my voice is heard. I’ve often found that my ideas and contributions required additional clarification, more supporting data, and extra reasoning to be fully recognized. The time and effort it takes to get my message across can be significant, but it has also taught me the importance of persistence and the value of clear, confident communication. These experiences have strengthened my resolve to advocate for my ideas and to create space for others to do the same.

Can you share some of the most important lessons you’ve learned from your successes and failures in business?

An important lesson I’ve learned is the necessity of staying in a leadership role and continuously uplifting and training my team. It can be tempting to handle things myself, especially when it seems easier at the moment, but that approach keeps me stuck in the details. Earlier this year, we wrapped up a massive project that I became so consumed by, that I lost sight of my primary responsibility—tending to all our clients and ensuring the agency continues to grow. I realized that by not empowering my team to handle the execution, I risked the capability of bringing in new business. This experience taught me the value of delegation and the importance of focusing on the bigger picture.

How do you set your business apart from others in your industry?

We set our business apart by treating every client as if we are an integral part of their team. We never settle for the easiest solutions and are committed to ensuring that every detail, no matter how large or small, meets the highest standards. Our approach is to go above and beyond, taking whatever steps necessary to achieve the best possible outcomes for our clients. This dedication to excellence and collaboration is what truly sets us apart in the industry.

Do you have a favorite quote or motto that inspires you?

One of my favorite quotes is “Buy the Ticket, Take the Ride” by Hunter S. Thompson. This has been both a personal and professional motto for me. It reminds me that we only get one life, and it’s essential to commit fully to making it the life we want. Embracing the journey, with all its ups and downs, and tuning out the outside noise, has always guided me. It’s about making bold decisions, enjoying the ride, and staying true to your own path.
